The Passing Protocol

The call — ‘on your left!’ — delivered early and audible (not shouted at the moment of passing: the startle-swerve is the collision mechanism), pass wide and slow-ish, thank-you as you go. Earbud-wearing walkers get extra margin; they didn’t hear the call.

The Speed Read

Skate at the trail’s speed, not yours: crowded Saturday paths cap everyone (the empty weekday morning is where speed lives), and the sight-line rule governs — never faster than you can stop within what you can see (the blind curve with a stroller behind it is the etiquette exam).

The Hazard Citizenship

The dog-leash geometry (pass on the OWNER’s side — the leash is an invisible tripwire), the child-wobble buffer (kids change direction like weather), and the stop-to-the-side rule (the mid-path standstill is everyone’s obstacle). Skaters, being fast AND quiet, owe the loudest courtesy.

The Goodwill Economics

Trail access is a reputation economy: skater-walker friction becomes skating-banned signage with remarkable speed. Every courteous pass is a deposit in the access account — the smile-and-thanks skater is, functionally, lobbying for the hobby. Skate like the trail’s future depends on the vibe, because it somewhat does.

Call early, pass wide, match the crowd’s speed, courtesy as lobbying. The trail was never yours or theirs — it is a shared society, and skaters glide furthest in the friendly one.
